North
Carolinians are quite enthused about their home being referred to as the “Tar
Heel State” and although the exact origin of how this nickname came to permeate
is unknown, North Carolina is still quickly becoming a very popular state to
live in. A study conducted by Wheelers Van Rentals has shown that Americans are
still moving to North Carolina at a higher rate than any other state in the
country. Now, you may be asking yourself
what North Carolina is known for that it has so many people starting their
lives there, the answer is simple. It’s the friendly nature of its citizens,
the temperate climate, the breezy coastline, rolling mountains and the state’s
rich history. For those that want to go in further detail, we will briefly
discuss three things that make North Carolina famous. The Wheelers study also
shows that it is a state setting the curb for accessible travel. Natural Parks
and tourist attractions, not to mention classic American barbecue is sought
after in the state.
First State in Flight
Orville
and Wilbur Wright may have been originally from Ohio but it was in the Tar Heel
state where they first successfully flew. Aviation was known to start in the
Wright brothers’ hometown of Dayton, Ohio which is where they had their printing
shop but it was in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where they made history by being
the first in flight. On December 17, 1903, Orville flew for 12 seconds over 120
feet of ground. The flight was the first by a manned, controlled, and heavier
than an aircraft that flew on its own power. North Carolina will always be
remembered as the first state where thanks to the Wright Brothers, an airplane
was flown.

Birthplace of Pepsi-Cola
As
most enemies, the two soft drink giants coke and Pepsi have more things in
common than one might think, the main one being that their places of birth are
actually closer than one may think. Pepsi was created in North Carolina while
Coke was invented in Georgia and both just about 10 years apart. Pepsi-Cola
began in a drugstore in New Bern, North Carolina in 1896 at the hands of a
pharmacist by the name of Caleb Bradham. His idea was to create a soft drink
that would aid consumers to better digestion and boost their energy. The
drugstore had their own soda machine and a cafeteria where their clientele
would meet. In no time, the popularity of Bradham’s invention led to other
drugstores wanting to sell the drink as well.

Mmmm.. Krispy Kreme
One
of the delicacies hardly ever associated with North Carolina is Krispy Kreme
Donuts. It began in 1937 in the city of Winston-Salem and since then has spread
across 38 states and Canada. Vernon Rudolph founded Krispy Kreme and sold his
first doughnuts for 25 cents per dozen. He started out borrowing ingredients
from a local grocer and now Krispy Kreme doughnuts produces and sells millions
of doughnuts per day. When the red light turns on, flocks of hundreds of hungry
fans wait in line to purchase doughnuts fresh out of the fryer. Krispy Kreme
products are also sold at thousands of supermarkets, convenience stores and a
variety of retailers across the country.
