Tutorial: How to start your own online business







Starting your own online business can be challenging, especially when you’ve never done anything of the sort before (including the grueling task of mastering SEO New York). Aside from getting your head around domain names and hosting plans, how to use the likes of Wordpress and ecommerce plugins so that people can purchase your product, there are also other details that you need to know. In this brief four-step tutorial, we will cover the basics of setting up a small online business.

 

Step 1: Find a niche, and then fill the need. 

Do thorough market research into what is in over abundance, what is selling, and what you think could be a good product or service that you can supply. How? Browse online forums to see what kinds of questions people are asking and what solution they need / are seeking / don’t realize they need for their problems. 

Once you’ve identified a problem and/or solution, search the internet to see how many results the solution to their problem gets. If there are few hits, then there’s a market for that! 

Your next step is to do keyword research using tools such as Google’s keyword planner. It will tell you how many people are searching a certain term as well as the competition for that term. If competition is low but search volume is high, you’re in luck, my friend. 

If you can identify any competitors for your keywords, then check out their sites and see what they’re up to. How are they filling the demand? What’s their style? How can you make yours better?

 

Step 2: Create great content 

Content is not just about being interesting, creative, and original. It’s about knowing how to sell your product or service. Yes, there’s a formula for that. It goes a little something like this:
  •  You first need to pike visitors’ interest with a persuasive headline.
  • Then you must discuss in not too much detail (this is a homepage, after all) the problem that your product will help them solve.
  • Provide real testimonials from people (they can be your friends to begin with, sure) who have used your product and seen great results. 
  •  Explain how your product benefits the user (and is the best solution to their problem; not just a solution). 
  •  Make an offer.
  • Make a strong guarantee.
  • Create urgency.
  • Ask for the sale.

 

Step 3: It’s design time! Now let’s have some fun building your website

Ever heard the maxim “keep it simple”? Well, this holds true for website design and navigation too. It is crucial that you have an easily readable and navigable homepage and website in order to retain the interest of your visitors. You have less than 10 seconds to get their attention, so every little detail matters. Here are some foolproof tips to get you thinking about how your website should look and function:

  • Choose one or two plain fonts on an inoffensive (i.e. plain) background. Nothing too dramatic or busy.
  • Make your navigation clear and simple, and the same on every page.
  • Use images and video to tell them your message in a way that means they don’t have to read a lot of text (yeah, people’s attention spans’ leave a lot to be desired these days).
  •  I cannot stress this point enough: make it easy to buy (i.e. there shouldn’t be more than two clicks between a potential customer and the checkout).

Is the Dotcom Bubble Destined to Repeat Itself?

With all the success technology has been having recently we have seen a huge increase in investments from private sectors.  Experts are seeing investments reach record highs just like back in the hay days before the dotcom bubble.

So much spending sets companies up for a fall if the funding dries up and they still have big bill to pay.

It seems though that people are not paying attention to this warning digging themselves deeper by the day.  The problem is if your competitor is spending then you must spend to also keep up.  The experts seem to divide 50/50.  Half of the experts seem to feel like the market is strong and this is the time to continue pumping funds into new businesses while others feel like we are seeing a reoccurrence of what happened in 1999.

Snapchat’s New Update: What It Means For You & Silicon Valley

Snapchat, the popular photo sharing app has released a new update in which it will now implement video chat and instant messaging. This is a new platform for the growing application and should make an impact on the tech industry. The California based company was founded by two Stanford University students and was initially released in September 2011.

According to blog.snapchat.com:

 "Swipe right on a friend’s name in your Snapchat inbox to start chatting. When you leave the chat screen, messages viewed by both you and your friend will be cleared – but either of you can always tap or screenshot to save anything you’d like to keep (addresses, to-do lists, etc.)!"

This move should come as no surprise to those savvy to the on goings in Silicon Valley. Snapchat was initally offered a $3 billion buyout from Social Media giant Facebook in November 2013.Then a follow up of $4 Billion from Google the following week. Both offers were declined and thus wide speculation began as to why this could be. $4 Billion is a sizeable chunk of change for two recent graduates. This is especially remarkable because as of October 2012 they were not turning a profit at all. $4 Billion dollar growth in 13 months and still less than satisfied. For those unfamiliar, the premise of the app is to capture an image or a video and instantly share it with someone else, who also has the Snapchat App on their phone or tablet. The image then deletes itself immediately after its opening and is erased from the Snapchat servers for good. If the recipient screenshots the image, the sender is alerted. Though there have been a handful of sexting controversies that surround this future tech giant, they have managed to keep their reputation clean overall.

With updates to the app, users eventually gained the ability to save pictures that are captured and with the introduction of the Snapchat story in October 2013 they can be viewed multiple times before being erased. Users' images and videos are saved for 24 hours  and can be viewed multiple times by anyone on the friends list of the one posting the content.

The introduction of video chat and instant messaging will not be an easy field for Snapchat to gain traction in. Though they have millions of users, those looking to message or video chat on their phones have plenty of options already. With Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkedin, WhatsApp and of course Skype the question remains as to how Snapchat will differentiate itself. What exactly will it provide to its users that these other messengers and Silicon Valley giants cannot provide already.
