At any
given moment on any given day you will find some type of disaster (be it
natural or man-made) going on around the world.
This is nothing new. What is new
is the way technology is helping us tackle these issues and bring much needed
aid to these people in need.
Take for
example the situation in Northern Iraq where the British government was
delivering emergency aid to people that were fleeing Islamic militants. Believe it or not one of the government’s
main concerns was giving the refugees the ability to charge their mobile
devices. This makes sense when you
consider that communication is one of the most important things in this society
these days.
British RAF
planes were said to have dropped 1,000 solar powered lanterns that were
attached to chargers that could be used for all types of mobile handsets. These lanterns allowed for lit areas at night
as well as charging abilities so refugees could keep the line of communication
opened with loved ones.
Another
example of how technology is helping in natural disaster is the Haiti
Impact. After the great quake that
struck Haiti many were left not knowing what to do. There was no way of informing the public of
the help that was on the way. This is
where TERA comes into play. TERA also
known as Trilogy Emergency Relief Application is a mass text messaging program. This program allowed aid workers to navigate
a disaster hit country from a computer screen.
It also allowed someone to pin point all the mobile phones being used in
a given area. After pinpointing the
devices the program would send out a blast text that holds 140 character giving
updates on where you could find help and other useful information.
Never
before have we seen a way to communicate with so many people almost instantly
during a natural disaster. This new
program can lead to the saving of countless lives. The TERA program also allows victims to send
text back to aid agencies, telling them where they are located and if they are
in need of emergency medical treatment.
Technology
can be used in so many ways. It’s good
to see technology being used for the benefit of man –kind. Although these are extreme examples of how
technology helps people there are other ways that technology plays a large part
in our lives.
