The Stigma About Male Sexual Health

A man has a terrible toothache causing him immense pain.  What does he do? He goes to the dentist to get it checked out.  Visiting a medical professional is the normal course of action for someone experiencing a health issue.

Now consider this, a man has been having problems obtaining and keeping an erection.  Sometimes he can get an erection, but is unable to maintain it long enough for a full session of intercourse, while other times he is unable to get an erection at all. What does he do? He tells his partner that he is exhausted or stressed from work or maybe that he is simply not in the mood, all of which could of course be true, but decides against talking to his doctor about the problem because he is embarrassed.

Unfortunately, the second scenario is all too common for men experiencing erectile dysfunction.  Why is it that for something like a toothache men will visit the doctor, but for something related to sexual health they are more inclined to avoid the doctor?  The underlying issue is the stigma associated with problems related to male sexual health.  These conditions, like impotence and premature ejaculation, are often made the butt of many jokes.  Why do people think it is okay to laugh at these types of jokes related to male sexual health problems when they can be serious health concerns?

Why are men so reluctant to discuss sexual health problems when it is widely acceptable for women to discuss these issues?  Perhaps it is because women are taught from a very young age how to care for their body and are provided a lot of information regarding health topics, such as menstruation and self-breast exams.  Women also learn about all of the potential issues they could experience relating to their sexual health starting at puberty. This could by why women are much more comfortable discussing their bodies and sexual health.

Men, on the other hand, normally only receive general information that mostly focuses on the biological and mechanical aspects of sex.  Potential problems like erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation are rarely discussed.  It could be because erectile dysfunction is generally perceived as a problem only for older men.  Despite this, the lack of information about sexual health problems for men certainly adds to the stigma.  When you combine this with the ingrained belief men have that they need to be strong and vile, it is clearly evident that this adds to the shame surrounding male sexual health problems.
