Most Frequented Accessible Destinations in the World

We all see ourselves vacationing with our loved ones and finding places that are as wheelchair accessible as they claim. A physical limitation is not a hindrance and thanks to recent awareness there are hundreds of cities all over the world that are opening their doors to a greater audience. Who among us doesn’t want to travel and see the world, meet people and experience hands on different cultures? Time and money might be important factors but there is a wide array of locations and attractions all over the world that you can visit on a budget. The following (in no particular order) are our world renowned cities that are uber accessible and fun for the whole family.

Portland, OR

It might not be the most well-known city in America nor is it even the capital of the state of Oregon (its Salem) but it is one of America’s most accessible city and the first on our list of accessible locations. It features a public transport system that is fully optimized for wheelchair users. Public busses and street cars are fully equipped for both motorized and self propelled wheelchairs. A great place to begin your journey would be Forest Park with their accessible paths and well maintained trails allow you to fully enjoy the beauty of a nature hike that is fun for the whole family. The theme parks are legendarily fully accessible as are most of the major attractions as well as shopping centers. National parks are also being equipped with the latest technology and the implementation of hydraulic lamps also gives these attractions an added value. The City of Roses (as Portland is often called) has a cornucopia of places to visit as well as things to do.

London, UK

When you think of transportation in London you imagine everything but comfort. You imagine busy and uncomfortable busses as well as other not so fun means of getting around town. Say what you want about the transportation but the wheelchair access is admirable with their lifts installed on all major stops. Wide doors also allow a wheelchair to easily roll on and off. London has hundreds of accessible attractions that you can visit with your family or even alone if you’re up for it. There are excellent attractions that make entertainment and sightseeing easier than ever. First on this exclusive list would be the places that we’ve seen hundreds of times thanks to pop culture but we’re never really been to. The London Eye, Buckingham Palace, the Natural History Museum are some of the attractions to name a few. London is also one of the gastronomy capitals of the world with more Michellin star chefs per capita than anywhere else.

Sydney, Australia

When we think Australia we think koalas, kangaroos and we think of Paul Hogan as Mike Dundee. Although there are more kangaroos than people, visiting Sydney you’ll most likely see nothing of the sort. Sydney is an incredibly accessible city and with millions being invested yearly into developing a more accessible city, you can be sure there is something for you. You can visit the most frequented landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge but don’t worry; these places are fully accessible and are visited by thousands each year. There are also dozens of other locations in Sydney that you can go to avoid the large clouds but have just as much fun. Check out Circular Quay and the harbor, discover the colonial heritage of the rocks and be inspired by museums and art galleries all over the city.

Sydney and London are great examples of large cities that thanks to public projects have managed to create a name for themselves among the accessible community. Portland might not be the biggest city in America but it is a good example of a small city looking to make a name for among that same accessible crowd.
